Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah) is the Danish art of self-care by creating cozy contentment and embracing the simple things in life. The Danes’ obsession with hygge is one of the reasons Denmark is classified as one of the world’s happiest countries.
Below are some simple ways to bring some hygge into your life.
WARM LIGHTS: Use soft, yellow light bulbs and avoid harsh white light bulbs. Light a candle. Candles bring warmth and light and is an important element of cozy living.
ADD TEXTURE: Throw Blankets | Heated Throws | Plush Carpets | Cushions | Sweaters | Socks. Warm and soft fabrics that hug the the body are a must – super hygge
INVITE NATURE IN: Add plants and bring in water elements. And of course, curl up by the fire if you have a fireplace. Include Himalayan salt lamps in your space.
COLORS: Warm, earth tones incorporated throughout the design is the way to go. Add art and texture to your walls.
SMELLS: Use essential oils in your diffusers or put on on a simmer pot.
WARM FOODS: Homemade sweets, comfort food, and hot drinks. Warm deserts, hot comfort food and chocolate are essential elements of the hygge lifestyle.
Embrace the simple things. Reading a book, singing, taking walk in your neighborhood, riding a bike, a picnic in the park, a bonfire outdoors and game or movie night are all part of hygge – living the good life!
